I've been BUSY!
I went to Winnipeg to visit my husband and I've become addicted to Flickr.
AND I've been working my tail off and haven't finished any projects.
On The Go, however, are a pair of thrummed mittens done in Knitpicks Andean Silk Twist (Poppy Fields colourway), a little person (during the superbowl, and as a little trial to see if I COULD knit a little person on the fly, because I'm doing a seeeeeecret proooooooject.
Next up are a kitty hat in a green that I have yet to find, a kitty hat in a rainbow yarn that I can't remember and still need to buy that's actually not a kitty hat, but will have bunny ears), and ten little people (for the seeeeeeecret) and finishing the pair of mitts for my husband.
And then two more skull hats.

Well, out here, we call them pirates.

I FINISHED IT!
It fits perfect and it's good and hot and the little lining keeps my ears good and warm and away from the wind. Blocking didn't cover as many sins as I'd hoped it would have, but I think it still came out pretty effing spiffy.
Woo!
And now on to my other billion projects!

Pirate gone done bust my Brittany

Well! I finished the outside of HelloYarn.com's We Call Them Pirates hat and started on the lining, where you switch over to #1 dpns. I used my brand new Brittany #1 dpns. Thing about those is they're very tiny and a little flexible and a whole lot of fragile.
So I snapped one in half.
Dammit.
Now I just have to hope that Walmart has a couple sets I can buy and that my cat doesn't bite off my yarn like he likes to do.

On the plus side, the hat KICKS ASS. I plan to have it finished soon and will have a massive picture up here. I'm very very very proud of it.

Garbage Town

I live in a slum and not being home makes me fear for my lovely things and my awesome cat and being home makes me fear for myself and makes me lose sleep and I want a bodyguard and I don't want to live in a slum in the middle of nowhere anymore, even though I have excellent neighbours who look out for me.
And I want a deadbolt.
Because what I have right now just doesn't cut it and reminds me of October of 1999 when some penises pried my doorknob off and took all my lovely things and messed up my apartment.

I would like to go home now.

Newest Knitted dealie

Sorry, I can't make it show up.
It's a Kitty Hat!
I knit it in Red Heart Whirly ("earth" colourway) using a pattern from Stitch & Bitch, but the pattern's actually available for free online.
I'm supa happy with it.
Next is a VERY cool hat for ME ME ME in dark grey with red, followed by thrummed mittens for Ainsley at Starbucks, followed by stripe-y kneesocks ALSO from Stitch & Bitch and then maybe I'll see if I can't steal this lady's awesome idea. I'm not telling you what it is, you have to click it. But it's AWESOME!

Next Wednesday, January 11th at 6:00pm - whenever (latest 10:00pm), I'm going to be at the Starbucks here in Whitehorse teaching at least one gung-ho learner to knit. WOO! FUN! I'm TRYING to start a stitch and bitch of my own, but we'll see how the interest goes.
Everybody should know about it.
I DID put it in the communication binder, after all...

I'm so excited:
I posted an official start date for my Starbucks Staff Stitch & Bitch (and learning session.) Next Wednesday (January 11th) from 6-10pm, I'll be at my Starbucks with some spare needles and yarn, teaching people to knit or just knitting with people or maybe even just sitting by myself with my own needles.
The General Manager's in on the action, for sure. She picked the date and time. Hee hee. It's going to be fun to teach people to knit and it's going to be fun to have so many co-workers with a common interest.
FUN FUN FUN!
And now I'm so tired I could pass out.
(I can't wait until my knitpicks order ships. Yarn for thrummed mittens for a friend and yarn for the stripey knee-socks from Stitch & Bitch!)

For Christmas

Turns out there are fringe benefits to being Santa's neighbour. All those times I shoveled the snow off his sidewalk or signed for packages paid off!
Santa decided to give me:
A Nikon D50 6.1 megapixel digital SLR. (Actually from my lovely husband.)
A Nikon FM with an original bill of sale from August of 1978 and tons of filters and original packaging and a kicass vintage camera strap. (This was from my brother.)
Here's a picture taken by the D50 of me holding the FM. Woo!
I also got a Citizen Eco-Drive watch (also from the husband), all four seasons of Coupling (husband), a $100 gift certificate to Old Navy (from my mum), a tiny die-cast Mini Cooper (from dad), a TON of Blue Bombers gear (from Husband), an Official Packers Helmet Replica and big fancy Nick & Nora sock monkey Jammies (from friends Dave & Shannon.)

And that's literally not even half.
Woot!

News and Presents

My news arrived in the form of a little congratulatory note with a pin like the one below attached to it:

I'm a Certified Barista!!!
I stuck the pin on my Starbucks hat so I can wear it all the time.

And as far as presents, my friend Amanda got her parcel in the mail, so now I can post about the Russian Winter hat from Stitch & Bitch Nation that I made for her.
Here's a picture of that, too! (Modeled by me, of course!)

It's a little dorky, but she's cute as hell, so I think she'll be able to pull it off.
See the stripe across my face? Effin' Luther...
Anyway, now it's back to knitting! I have one gold stripe pattern and one burgandy bar left on my harry potter scarf before I can block it and attach the fringe and then send it off. On saturday.
Meantime, I'ma see how the gnomey hat from HelloYarn.com looks like it's gonna turn out.
One more sleepless night and then it's all over!

Three Scarves and a Hat To Go.

Now that I'm done my effing Monk's Travel Satchel bag and my brother's VinterLue, it's all mindless knitting from now on!
Here are pictures of the bag and hat:

Hat:

Blocking it made it a little larger and I lined it with brown polarfleece. I also added skinny earflap braids and a massive crown tassle (that I'm fairly partial to.)

Bag:

The finished bag - which I copped out on anyway, by just felting the pieces and blanket-stitching them together - looked a far cry from being worth $70 in supplies and 6 months of time, so I sewed on a black and red cherry blossom motif. I think it looks fairly posh.
Here I am wearing it in the shabby mirror in my messy craft room for a size reference:

Now half a Harry Potter scarf (incidentally, I saw Goblet of Fire tonight. Hard to watch. I cried. I also badly badly want the toques the Weasley twins were wearing!), the finishing touches on a mistake stitch rib scarf for my friend's scarf drive, a straight garter stitch scarf - also for the scarf drive... as it is, I'ma have to send all this stuff xpress post! - and another hat and then I'm DONE FOR CHRISTMAS!

Then comes the thrummed mitts, kitty hat, two pairs of superhero mits, felted slippers, FELT slippers and a fez. I think I'll do the felted slippers first, since they're for me.

Also, I need to update that Monkee and Arielvay both sent me wonderful RAKs (Monkee: a random assortment of wonderful goodies; Arielvay: the yarn for the gnomey hat), but I still need to take pictures, which I'll do during daylight.

The Bad Hat, or: How I Knit A Hat The Wrong Way And Then Did It Again The Right Way

I was going to knit a hat for my brother and decided that I liked VinterLue from Knitty.com.
Looked easy enough.
So I grabbed some Alafoss Lopi in Spring Green and White and went ahead and knit it:

Obviously, the something needed to change.
SO, I bought some more yarn (in a variagated brown and a rusty orange, which I guess I should have done in the first place because my brother's scarf and mitts are brown and orange. It's like a sign from the yarn gods that I should have stuck with the scheme), bought a size six needle instead of size five and changed my fair-isle method to combination from straight ugly tight right-hand.
AND IT WORKED!

It looks a little big, but my brother has a big head and a lot of hair. Also, I have to put the braids on (one on the top, too, I think) and sew some brown polarfleece I bought as a lining. Woo!

(PS. I have no idea why the little lines are going one way on the green and white hat and another way in the brown and orange hat. I haven't got the slightest idea what I did there...)

I'm SO HOT

Ok, I'm hot.
FIRST off, I've finally bought a size SMALL shirt (WHAT? With these bazoombas??) and decided that just the shirt wasn't good enough. And the very next day, Mz Roxy, the angel of psychic intuition, turned me on to the perfect sleeveless shirt accessory.
Not only did this give me the shrug that I'd been half-looking for, but a fantastic excuse to finally buy some Manos del Uruguay variagated yarn. I chose "Mar", pictured below because the cranberries in the wool picked up the cranberry in my pretty top perfectly:

SO! I finally got it mostly knit up (still needs the edging on the body) and tried it on to see if it was even any good, and it looked super! I got out the top, put it on, and tried it on with the shrug, and I was HOT AS HELL! I couldn't believe how cute I looked!
Now... I know I'm pretty self-centered and full of myself on the whole, but it's generally an act or a joke. This time, though? Wow.
I'ma knit me up some more of these for my Threadless.com t-shirts!

The beauty of freedom

I've finished knitting The Bag That Wouldn't End and it's finished blocking for assembly (more on this later.)
Meanwhile, I've managed to cast on two more projects and even finished one! (Two day lazy weekend project. Woo!)
Still on the needles is the Harry Potter Scarf for my best friend's niece. It took over a month for the wool to come in, because apparently Harry Potter scarves are big this year. I'm into my second stripe-pattern repeat and absolutely could not have predicted how awesome it would look. I can't wait to have this project finished so I can hold the whole thing in my hands.
Project #2 is sadly also going to the same best friend's littlest niece. I will post pictures of everything once I have them, but this beautiful ivory and apple green Vinter Lue cap that was supposed to be meant as a birthday present for my large-headed brother wound up absolutely TINY. (Means I did something wrong and maybe it's a nod from the Knitting Gods that I should stick with the brown/orange colour scheme for Le Benjamin.) I'ma talk with Theresa later about what I could have done wrong. The earflaps worked. They're human-sized. But the cap itself is teeeeeny tiny.
BUT!
It was supa-easy and fun to knit, so absolutely no problems with making another.

I don't do them in my bathtub, but I like to do drawings none the less.
My best friend Russ occasionally draws a comic strip and one time he was being super lazy, so I drew one for him. Then I drew another.
Basically the quality you'd expect from a 7 year old with Mr. Sketch markers and some construction paper, but they're fun to do.
Here is my third contribution to the Kid Continuity Occasionally-Updated Comic Strip.

Crafting Bender

I've been crafting my ass off and the only finished project I can't even talk about because the person who's getting it for Christmas also has a link to the blog, so I don't want to spoil the surprise for her/him.
Dammit.
But most people who will read this I'll probably have shown it to anyway (like a kid with a macaroni drawing or a percussion instrument made of lentils inside two glued-together paper plates.)
Also in the works:
The Never-Ending Monk's Travel Satchel - I'm on the back/flap. About 4" more of stockingette and then on to 7" of moss stitch. I read the instructions for the pockets, and they're like "cast on 39 sts, work for 6" in moss stitch". Uh... pockets go on the inside. Why on EARTH would I do them in moss? Because I'm insane? No. I'm not. Stockingette it is.
My brother's christmas hat - I bought the yarn for it: alafoss lopi in white and apple green. I'ma reverse the colouring of the hat. It's going to be predominantly white with bright green detailing. I think it'll look fun and happy and will go well with my brother's dark colouring (sometimes he grows a massive beard in the winter, too.)
MY OWN lace scarf - I bought two balls of crystal palace merino frappe in mink to make a lace scarf with. (Beware: that link be a PDF!
What else is new?
I had a job interview today at Starbucks for a part-time second job. I think it went ok. I should know on monday if I got hired. They loved my resume. Which is good, because I put a lot of time into it. I think I answered most of the questions well.
And now it's time to go convert that lace chart pattern into words, deliver some clothes to the Salvation Army (hey! I can fit all my crap into my drawers now! All that remains to be done is pairing up all my orphan socks and the throwing out of old panties. Guh. That seems so awful when you type it out. "Gonna toss all the grotty nickers I've been wearing anyway - on account of I'm lazy - to make room for my newer less-nasty panties. Gonna throw them in a bag and put them outside where any pervert can get 'em!" Classy.)

This month has been kind of crummy, so the amazingness of today has given me hope for the awesomeness of upcoming October.
FIRST off, I got a pick-up slip in the mail. When I went down to the post office, there was a big shoe-box with my name on it from Mz. ROXAY.
The contents are pictured below:

Back row: Mango body scrub, two skeins of wool (the black one is actually a lovely dark navy), calcium gum, DOG SOCKS (I LOVE SOCKS), a beautiful lemony bath set, a tiny grape jam, a little sharpie and a pearlescent butterfly bag.
Front row: hooters wetnaps with sayings on them, FUZZY CAT STICKERS, Hello Kitty kleenex (which tragically I can't use because I have a cold and my nose is so raw that I have to touch it ever-so-lightly with lotionated kleenex for fear that it'll turn into ground beef), a hair gel sample (which I plan on using once I get my cute haircut on friday, but not until saturday, which will be covered below), a Crabtree & Evelyn gardener's hand treatment sample (I send this stuff to my mum all the time and have never tried it, so I'm psyched) and a strawberry Laffy Taffy.
Notably and tragically absent are a cherry Laffy Taffy and a massive bag of grape licorice whips which didn't make it out of the office. (The grape licorice whips were enjoyed by my entire office AND some customers. The cherry Laffy Taffy, I stuffed into my own face hole.)

AND, on the way to pick up the parcel, I noticed A NEW LYS THAT OPENS ON SATURDAY! There is only one in Whitehorse, so a second is a TOTAL COUP.
And I'm getting my hair cut like the redhead (the shorter haired one) in Stitch N Bitch Nation on Friday, so I plan on using my little hair gel to spike it up all cute to go check out the yarn store. It's caled Knit something, I think.

Russian Winter Christmas

First Post: two finished scarves

This is going to be brief, because it's try effing four and I'm tired.

Here are two finished scarves that are for Christmas.

Scarf one: The Rabbit Tracks Lace scarf - made with Dropps 100% alpaca (a nice cadet blue.) This is intended to be gifted to my grandma wrapped around a lovely lavender sachet. This is my first lace project and my grandma corrected my knitting and gave me all her needles.

This is the scarf resting luxuriously on a pillow.

Here is me wearing the lovely scarf (in fact, I think I may buy some in green and make one for myself!)

Scarf Two: The Licorice Scarf - simple mistake stitch rib in Euroflax wet spun linen and Debbie Bliss baby cashmerino. It looks like licorice to me, so I've called it The Licorice Scarf. This is going to my husband who has asked every year for four years for a scarf for Christmas.
